A KOTOBUKIYA Japanese import!  Kotobukiya is proud to present the next plastic model kit from the hit manga and anime franchise Knights of Sidonia that tells the story of humans fleeing the destruction of Earth on colony spaceships.  In order to protect themselves from the monstrous Gauna they use giant robots called Guardians, and up next is a new elite unit based on an illustration by Tsutomu Nihei, the TSUGUMORI KAINI!  Produced by Toa Heavy Industries, this giant robot has a really unique look with strikingly angular armor and long, thin limbs.  The “Kaini” variation is comprised of 300 pieces pre-colored in white and gray with red details so no painting is required.  Of course, it comes with the Guardian’s full complement of weapons including cannons and blades as well as multiple interchangeable hands for plenty of display options.  Standing just under 8 inches tall (1/100 scale), the Tsugumori Kaini has 40 points of articulation for a wide range of posing options!

Details:

  • Consisting of 300 pieces formed in pre-colored plastic, including multiple hands for posing open handed or while holding weapons.
  • Tsugumori stands nearly 20 cm/ 8 in tall in 1/100 scale.
  • Based on an illustration by Tsutomu Nihei.

Awesome Design! Terrible kit!

I have always liked the designs from Tsutomu Nihei. Tsugumori has been one of my favorite mecha designs. However, the kit is the worst I've seen in my time of building models from Bandai and Kotobukiya. It is quite impossible to work with unless you have decent techniques in model-making. I've worked with resin kits that demand less attention. Despite some small errors in the manual, the assembly process is okay. However, I can see feel the carelessness from Kotobukiya when making this great mecha design into a kit. Most parts come from two parts with an ugly seam line in the middle. The most irritating part is that even the most obvious places have seam lines. Not all the seam lines are fixable. Some parts do not fit well, and I had to cut the pegs and glue them together. It's great that some of the Vernier thrusters are achieved through a different part. But, most Vernier thrusters are not color-separated, requiring MANY circular cuts when masking. This can be worked around by purchasing pre-cut circular masking tape with a diameter of 2mm from HIQ parts. However, if you were unable to paint it, it's definitely going to be distracting from the overall imagery. Even worse, the manual does not contain a painting schematic, you basically have to decode everything from the limited pictures in the manual and online. This is a model with big surfaces, so advanced techniques in painting (eg. MAX technique) will be helpful. The color scheme is quite straightforward. Despite all the pain I had to go through, I would still recommend it, since it's such a beautiful design. Will upload more pictures when I'm done painting it.
