Red Ogre Kiyomori Model Kit Review

This was my first time putting together a third-party model kit, and the Red Ogre Kiyomori was quite the challenge. I really like the figure because it’s very detailed once it has been fully built. It tremendously gives my gunpla filled shelf a commanding presence! However, the kit does have several flaws that I agree with the first reviewer especially with the nubs despite being undergated. While the level of detail is amazing, it also means that some of the parts are delicate and require careful handling to avoid breakage. In my case, I was experiencing fitting issues with the head, wrists, and pauldrons in which it demanded patience and accuracy. Additionally, I found the kit somewhat hard to pose, which made it a bit challenging to achieve the perfect display stance I was looking for. One thing to note for people who are looking build this kit is that there is a lot of sharp pieces. I had to file some of those pieces especially the weapon sets and the V-fins. Moreover, some of the connector pieces that would connect together became brittle and snapped which required me to glue them back together. Despite these challenges, the final product is undeniably striking and well worth the effort. Overall, the Red Ogre Kiyomori model kit makes for a standout addition to any collection, though it does require a bit of extra care and effort to bring out its full potential!

Very.... meh. Still a good value, though.

If you really really like the design, it's worth the money. If you're looking for a fun build from a third party model company, there are much better options. For the money, you get a lot of stuff, including really cool weapons, effects parts, base, etc. And it's overall pretty big. HOWEVER, in general, almost everything in the kit feels rushed or not quite finished in terms of design, engineering, and manufacturing. The nubs are terrible, even with as much undergating as this kit has, especially on the painted gold parts. Some nubs are literally CENTIMETERS thick, especially on the effects parts. ALMOST EVERY NUB ENDS ON A CHAMFER. And the undergating is so backwards on a lot of parts. For instance, the scabbard will have 7, but 2 are undergated, and those 2 go inside another part anyway. The remaining 5 were placed off a ledge, so you have to sand that tiny ledge for a flush look. Lots of joints are poorly designed and can snap while you're putting it together. Notably, the shoulder pauldrons and ankles. The chest mouth gimmick is floppy, although it looks cool. Lots of this kit looks cool, but fails on closer inspection. Things like the skirt armor and pauldrons are unique and fun, but like in so many other places, there are interferences where things can't move smoothly past each other, so stuff falls off while posing. The pre-assembled POM frame is squeaky but functional for the most part, as long as you just want to have the kit standing still inside its included base. It can hold its large weapons well, but the hand designs are terrible. The movable thumb doesn't have enough clearance, it's difficult to get around the handles of things. I could go on and on, but overall, it just seems like they rushed this thing to get it into the market. Maybe the Tengu will be better, but I'll put my money into other Chinese mecha model companies that put more care into their kits, like In Era+, YoloPark, and Meng. With all that negative, though, it's still a big, good-looking kit with a lot of stuff. And all the negatives can be fixed with some cement, paint, and patience.
